The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has withdrawn the Paddy Power Oscar Pistorious advert, after receiving 5,200 complaints about the ad which promised to refund all losing bets if Oscar Pistorious is not found guilty of murder.
The Bookmaker, already known for its controversy, is currently accepting bets on the result of the trial, offering odds of 2/5 on a not guilty jury verdict. To ‘compliment’ the betting, Paddy Power created a print campaign which showed Oscar Pistorious’ face on an Oscar’s award, with the line: “It’s Oscar time. Money back if he walks. We will refund all losing bets on the Oscar Pistorius trial if he is found not guilty”.
The Paddy Power Oscar Pistorius advert provoked a number of complaints from anti-domestic violence groups, while the ASA reviewed the ads offensive-ness to issues surrounding a murder trial, such as the death of a woman and disability.
